If you take drugs from your child, you must either destroy them or hand them to the police as soon as possible. Illegal drugs are unlikely to be pure and you won’t know what it has been mixed with or its strength. If your child is taking drugs, encourage them to be honest with you about what they’re taking, how often and why they’re taking them.

This report was first published in 2013 and seeks to open and refocus the debate on drug treatment and drug policy through the eyes of the medical profession. If the police stop you and suspect you’ve taken drugs they will ask you to take a ‘Field Impairment Test’. This is a series of tests, such as asking you to walk in drugs a straight line and checking your eyes. The prevalence of drug use varies by household characteristics, such as household income (Figure 6). Those earning less than £10,400 per year were more likely to use a drug in the last year (15.2%) than those with higher incomes. These differences may not be independently related as they may be affected by factors such as age, as younger people are likely to have a lower income.
